Staff Reporter : Technical team likely to reach city in couple of days for its maintenance In absence of the radar satellite images are providing the data The Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) in Nagpur has once again failed to perform when it is needed the most. The monsoon has commenced in the region and the DWR installed at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport failed to predict the convective clouds from last few days. “The radar is not providing the data with accuracy due to some technical glitch. We have registered a complaint and within 2-3 days the maintenance team from Delhi will arrive in city to rectify the issue” M L Sahu Scientist F and Deputy Director General Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) told The Hitavada. “Though the radar is not working properly we are getting accurate weather details with the help of satellite images” said Sahu. We are getting the data but the DWR is not showing the convective cloud of the region Sahu added. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has improved its nowcast prediction which provide the weather activities of next 3 hours with the help of the DWR. The radar predicts the thunderstorm and lightning activities which is very helpful for agrarians. However this technical glitch has affected the nowcast warning. The DWR since its inception in February 2011 had been non-functional ample of times for various reasons. This C-Band DWR provides the data of Vidarbha Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh region. The DWR was made in China and procured through SGS Weather and Environment Systems and uses American Technology. It can generate information of 1 km to 8 km height from earth surface in a radius of 500 km. There are total 27 DWRs working in all over the country and in Central India only Nagpur and Bhopal have this technology. DWRs are useful in collecting extreme weather systems and hence are very important in the present season.
