By Biraj Dixit : COURAGE it is often said is Gods power coming from within. The post-COVID-19 world will recall tales of indomitable courage that has been the hallmark of human audacity in face of a pandemic. It was amply found within the unyielding white coats; displayed often through the invincible spirit of very many corona warriors it rocked skies through relentless prayers and was many times visible in the never-say-die spirit of sufferers themselves. For many it has been an amalgam of all these and many more things that helped them walk back home brushing off death. Dr Aadila Khadiwala well-known poetess really cannot pinpoint who or what saved her. It was perhaps all of these and many more small and big things. But on path of steady recovery as Dr Aadila held her anthology aptly titled Samunder Ke Moti the one thing she was certain of was that she had found many a pearl while sailing in the vast ocean of uncertainty between life and death. Admitted to the Care Hospital on May 1 for treatment of COVID a highly diabetic Dr Aadila and her family knew that things were not going to be easy. Even as doctors struggled to cure her of COVID-19 she developed mucormycosis necessitating a surgery. With family praying for her recovery and doctors trying their best Dr Aadila weathered a storm and registered a steady recovery. Happy with her progress doctors informed her husband and renowned poet Dr Sagar Khadiwala that she would be discharged soon. As the family was preparing for discharge Dr Aadila suffered a terrible cardiac arrest and had to be again rushed to the ICU and on ventilator. While the family was praying for her recovery the doctors informed them that she had also suffered from kidney failure and had to be kept on dialysis. Hoping against hope the family kept praying. On May 21 Dr Khadiwalas son also a doctor who had worked earlier with Care Hospital learnt from the hospital that his mother was sinking. Too shaken to inform his father he messaged Dr Sagar at around 2.30 am that perhaps his mother might not see the morrow. “It was perhaps the magic of prayers that she sailed through that awful night and did live to see another day” said Dr Khadiwala not wanting to remember that hard-to-forget night. Defeating a mountain of ailments Dr Aadila kept walking on path of recovery much to the happy amazement of the doctors as well. She did not need more than 3 dialyses. Even as Dr Aadila was fighting her battles with ailments her husband took upon himself the task to ensure that his beloved wifes wishes come true. Too much burdened by his wifes failing health it had skipped Dr Sagars mind that Dr Aadila had received a grant from Maharashtras Hindi Sahitya Akademi Mumbai for her book. He found papers and collected Dr Aadilas pearls. “I knew how much she wanted her book to see the light of the day. Though lockdowns had made it near impossible to get her book published I had this little glimmer of hope that perhaps seeing her book might help her recovery. Oscillating between hope and despair I also thought that heavens forbid if at all she bids me a final goodbye I will never forgive myself if she goes without seeing her book published” recalled Dr Sagar. So despite lockdown he took it upon himself to get the book published. From the cover page to designing to cutting to binding Dr Sagar did most of the work on his own. “I cut pages with my bare hands and bound them” an emotionally choked Dr Sagar said. Finally the book came out and a copy of it made its way into Dr Aadilas hands. “When next I spoke to her I could feel a feeble life returning in her voice.” As her heart condition improved the grateful family asked Dr Kamal Bhutada to release the book which he readily agreed to. Unfortunately the tribulations were yet not over. Her kidney failure had given way to impurities entering her blood and her condition further deteriorated. But for a spirit that had decided to remain indomitable victory is but a foregone conclusion. Dr Aadila and the team at the Care Hospital together tided over that storm too. And finally Samunder Ke Moti saw the light of the day. It was released at the hands of Dr Kamal Bhutada on June 12 with a smiling Dr Aadila by his side on a wheelchair. “I know for sure that what has defeated these huge onslaught of ailments are the number of prayers from friends and well-wishers whose commands destiny could not defy. Aadila and I will forever remain indebted to all who have prayed for her well-being and to the doctors who have seen this through” said an ever-grateful Dr Sagar adding that people must never underestimate the power of hope. True hope has two facets -- one dark and one bright. Habitually and even culturally the human mind often dwells on the darker side -- and invites it almost as a self-fulfilling prophecy. That is how and where things fail; -- and prayers do not reach the target. For prayers have an innate virtue -- operating in brightness of optimism.
