145 tola gold seized at airport

Nagpur: The Air-intelligence unit (AIU) of Nagpur custom has seized around 145 tola gold, worth over ₹87 lakh, intercepting two smugglers from Hubli in Karnataka at the Nagpur airport on Monday. The gold was found in semi-liquid form in the baggage.Following a tip-off, the commissioner of custom Avinash Thete and Addl Commissioner Peeyoush Bhati formed a team under SP Tridip Pal to lay a trap and intercepted the smugglers who had flown in from Qatar.The custom department had stepped up surveillance at the Nagpur airport which is being used by the smugglers as a easy transit point due to lesser vigilance. The smugglers, who had been involved in stealing tax and duties, have started using smaller centres like Nagpur for sneaking out with the gold after landing from international destinations.
