Experts blame constructions for air pollution in city

Nagpur: With only 2% of the Indian population breathing clean air, pollution has emerged as a pressing national concern. Cities, including Nagpur, have witnessed a surge in air pollution levels. In fact, the states second capital recorded a poor Air Quality Index for the first time ever.In a panel discussion organized by the Indian Chest Society in Nagpur, experts from various fields, including doctors, scientists and specialists in respiratory sciences, deliberated on multiple facets of air pollution.Sangeeta Goel Ghatge, principal scientist from Neeri, identified ongoing construction activities as a potential contributor to the recent spike in pollution in Nagpur. A 100 meter by 100 meter construction area releases 90 kg of particulate matter daily, adding to the already polluted air, she said. Ghatge acknowledged the authorities efforts to counterbalance development by planting trees and urged patience to witness the impact.Doctors said that firecrackers are not the sole culprits behind Nagpurs declining air quality. Dr Sundeep Salvi, national president of the Indian Chest Society, explained that winter conditions make the air heavy, causing particles to linger longer. Biomass burning during winters exacerbates pollution levels, said Salvi.Renowned pulmonologist Dr Rajesh Swarnakar underscored the adverse effects of air pollution on respiratory health, citing bronchitis, asthma, and COPD exacerbation as consequences.Professor Radha Munje, head of the department of respiratory medicine at IGGMCH, emphasized on the importance of hydration, urging individuals to consume ample amounts of fluids to maintain respiratory health.Dr Rajesh Swarnakar advocated a balanced diet.Dr Sundeep Salvi highlighted the role of regular exercise, with walking, yoga, and pranayama as beneficial activities for lung and heart health.
