Nagpur overtakes Mum, Pune in hit-&-run cases

Nagpur: Nagpur was ranked 10th in the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) latest report in terms of road accident deaths due to negligence, but the city has earned the dubious distinction of topping the chart in hit and run cases among three metropolitan cities in Maharashtra. The city recorded 294 hit and run cases, while Mumbai and Pune registered 208 and 169 cases, respectively, in 2022.The 294 hit and run incidents in the city had claimed 332 lives, while Mumbai and Pune recorded 212 and 171 fatalities, respectively.The NCRB data has underlined that Nagpur has surpassed Pune in terms of rash driving on roads and is ranked only after Mumbai. While the state capital had registered 24,439 incidents of rash driving, there were 766 cases in Pune and 1,025 cases in Nagpur.Obstructions on city roads (illegally and haphazard parked vehicles) has slowed down vehicular movement in the city. TOI has regularly reported on the problem. As per the NCRB data, Nagpur with 4, 232 cases surpassed Mumbai and Pune where 610 and 49 cases were registered, respectively. According to traffic experts, there is poor enforcement of traffic rules and regulations in the city. Traffic police are concerned only about issuing challans to violators and collecting fines to generate revenue. Despite a rise in violations, there is no improvement in traffic scenario as motorists are do not bother to follow the law, they said.Experts feel neither the traffic police nor the regional transport office is taking efforts to educate motorists. The city police registered 19,250 cases in 2020, 22,302 in 2021, and 19,167 in 2022, amounting to a 14% drop. Nagpur is ranked eighth in crime rate among 19 metropolitan cities, with a rate of 767.3 per one lakh population. The citys murder rate is 2.6, sharing the seventh spot with Ghaziabad. Serious cognizable offences have also decreased from three incidents per hour in 2021 to two in 2022.
