Amateur singers present immortal classics of B/W era

All the singers for the evening wore dresses and saris in shades of black and white. Organized every year by her academy Swarshilp, the theme this year was songs from the films of black and white era.The stage was set in black and white with pictures of actors of the era forming the background. The concert began with a stirring rendition of the song Jyoti kalash chhalke by Baraskar. Nagpur: Friends, family and well-wishers packed the Scientific Society Hall on Friday as music trainer Bhagyashree Baraskar presented the first edition of a musical, Shades of Black and White (Part I) to showcase the talent of her students. The song list comprised of 26 superhits from the films of 50s and 60s presented by women in their 40s and 50s who have been learning music with Baraskar.

The song list comprised of 26 superhits from the films of 50s and 60s presented by women in their 40s and 50s who have been learning music with Baraskar. The concert began with a stirring rendition of the song Jyoti kalash chhalke by Baraskar. This was followed by her students taking the stage in quick succession.Sarita Pandit and Sangeeta Karandikar set the tone with the lilting 'Dil ki nazar se' followed by a peppy 'Hawa main udta jaaye' performed by young Niharika Chajed.Dr Neeta Bhave showed her singing prowess with the semi-classical 'Balma maine naa' and so did Sarita Puradbhat with the tricky number 'Akhiyan sang akhiyan lage' from the film Bada Adami.Almost all the singers for the evening were female so much so that event the duets were sung by two female singers. But there was an exception as presenting the duet 'Ye raatein ye mausam nadi ka kinara' with his wife Devyani was Sandeep Joshi, leader of the ruling party in Nagpur Municipal Corporation.Enjoying the catcalls, applause and excited shouts from the audience, the couple also belted out solo songs with Sandeep giving his version of popular numbers 'Bekarar karke hume' and 'Khoya khoya chand' while Devyani also sang 'Tadbeer se bigdi hui'.The programme was unique for the range of voices that were heard in one evening. But it was Shivangi Buty who stood out with 'Dil ki girah khol do' which she sang with Chajed and her solo rendition of 'Laga chunri main daag'.The second part of the musical show will be presented on April 28.when the next batch of students will take the stage.
