Nagpur: Farm task force head Kishore Tiwari has slammed the Congress-NCP and Shetkari Sanghatana for their double standards on core issues of farming. "These parties have no moral authority to demand implementation of MS Swaminathan Commission report," Tiwari said in a statement on Monday."From 2004 to 2014 when the Congress was in power at the centre. it did little to implement the report. As the Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, then, consigned the Swaminathan report to the dustbin," Tiwari alleged. One of the important recommendations of Swaminathan was to to revise minimum support prices to factor in 50% as farmer's profit over and above his input costs. "But this goes against the grain of the Dunkel draft of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) that the government has accepted. The Shetkari Sanghatana had then supported the idea of global market and removing all restrictions on farm exports," said Tiwari. He said under E+WTO regime, it would not be possible to cross-subsidize crop prices and so implementation of Swaminathan formula was now not at all possible. "Besides, the other suggestions like improving seeds quality, soil health cards, farm credit reforms have been adopted by the Modi government which is trying its best to double farm incomes," said Tiwari. He said Maharashtra was in the forefront in putting Modi's plan into place by providing market linkages, value addition facilities at village level and boosting processing units.
