The registrations are increasing,” said Ajay Deore, assistant commissioner of police.“One may register with police to contribute for road safety and traffic management for half an hour in a week or even four hours a day. Citizens can come in and out of the programme at any point of time. There is absolutely no binding on citizens,” another senior officer said.“There is no query that these people have to answer. They can join us to make traffic better till the time they feel happy, satisfied and content,” the officer added.“The programme was launched about a month ago and citizens are currently rendering their services at a couple of signals and cross-overs. After the service picks up, we will give them T-shirts, ID cards and batons,” the officer said.Police hope the city will benefit from vahatuk mitras immensely.“Our aim is to make people follow norms. By seeing someone from them helping police, the citizens will also stick to discipline,” the officer said.
