City’s crime graph shows upward trend

Nashik: The city’s crime graph is showing a rise in the number of offences lodged at police stations in the first quarter of this year compared to the corresponding figure in 2017.While a 9% increase in the overall crime rate, indicates the rise in offences related to chain snatching, house break-ins and roadside robberies.Between January 1 and March 31, police registered 904 offences. During the same period last year, the number of offences was 829. There is a rise of 9% of crimes registered.Controlling roadside robberies continues to be a tough task for city police as these offences are continuously on the rise. Apart from chain snatchings, there are also other robberies where people are robbed of their cash, cellphones, etc.A senior police officer said people from other parts of the state and country were involved in robberies and house break-ins. Cases detected a few months ago revealed that robbers, burglars, are continuously on the move to commit robberies and burglaries from one city to another across the country.Earlier this month, the crime branch arrested four chain snatchers, involved in nine cases in the city. The criminals were arrested while they were en route Mumbai from Solapur by train.Criminals have also been arrested from places like Gujarat and Rajasthan for committing crimes in the city.ACP Ashok Nakhate said, “While police were sincerely taking efforts to detect various crimes, we also appeal to the public to take precautions so that they do not become victims of robbers, conmen or burglars who commit house break-ins. We have appealed to the in-charge of all police stations to spread awareness on this. Mumbai Naka police have already got around 10,000 pamphlets on awareness printed to be distributed at all residential and commercial areas of their jurisdiction.”There is also a significant rise in cheating cases. In the first quarter of this calendar year, the police have registered 73 such cases as against 42 registered in the same period last year.Three cheating cases were also registered with the city police on Monday. In one of them, a builder from Jail Road in Nashik Road was cheated by his employee of Rs 1.21 lakh by forging signatures on the cheque book of the builder and withdrawing cash from banks and also taking money from the builder’s office during his absence.In another case of cheating registered with the Deolali Camp police, a 25-year-old woman from Deolali Camp was cheated of Rs 40,500 by two unidentified women on the pretext of offering a job. The third case was where a woman was booked for producing a fake non-creamy layer certificate for Nashik police recruitment drive.A senior police officer said crime figures continue to drop or fall.
