Nashik: Gold shops in the city were crowded on the occassion of Akshaya Tritiya on Wednesday with customers buying ornaments despite the rise in gold prices over the past one month.According to the sources from city jewellery market , the jewellers did 50% better business on this Akshaya Tritiya compared to last year. The city recorded gold business worth Rs 75crore. Last year, the city jewellers had recorded Rs 50crore business.The gold prices has increased to Rs 31,700 per 10g on Wednesday, against Rs 30,800 per 10g on March 18. Apart from Dusshera, Diwali and Gudi Padwa, people prefer buying gold ornaments on Akshaya Tritiya. The silver prices were recorded at Rs 40,000 per kg on April 18 as against Rs 39,000 per kg on Gudi Padwa a month ago. Rajendra Odhekar, senior office-bearer and former president of Nashik Jewellers Association (NJA), said, “We had very good business on Akshaya Tritiya as compared to last year. People came in huge numbers to buy gold bars or coins and jewellery throughout the day. Last year, we could feel the impact of demonetisation. But we had good business this year,” he said, but refused to divulge details related to sales.Around 1,000 of the total 5,000 jewellery shops in the district are located in the limits of Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC). There are 250 shops at Saraf Bazaar, which is a hub for jewellery shops in the city.
