Corporators blame NMC for rise in dengue cases

Some of the corporators met the municipal commissioner Tukaram Mundhe on Tuesday and discussed the issue.Mundhe has directed the officials concerned to take immediate measures in order to curb dengue and other epidemic diseases in the city.

Nashik: A section of city corporators have lashed out against the health department of the civic body for doing little towards tackling the growing problem of vector-borne diseases in the city.They alleged that the department has not conducted fogging and spraying exercise ahead of the monsoon that led to increase in dengue cases in just 15 days. And blood samples of 33 patients suspected to be suffering from chikungunya have been sent for tests.The corporators have demanded stepping up of fogging and spraying at all homes in the city to prevent vector-borne diseases. Some of the corporators met the municipal commissioner Tukaram Mundhe on Tuesday and discussed the issue.Mundhe has directed the officials concerned to take immediate measures in order to curb dengue and other epidemic diseases in the city. Shyam Badade, one of the corporators, said the negligence of the civic body’s health department is witnessing rising number of vector-borne diseases in the city.“The health department failed to carry out regular fogging across the city before the monsoon,” he said.According to him, as per the agreement signed with the pest control contractor, the civic administration should have ensured that spraying was done at each house of the city. “We want the municipal corporation to conduct regular spraying and fogging across the city to curb spread of dengue cases,” he added.Mukesh Shahane, Cidco division corporator, said, “My ward is basically a locality of company workers. The authorities are yet to start cleaning of nullahs even though the monsoon has set in.”He added that even spraying is erratic and the health department needs to conduct daily spraying and fogging in all areas.However, NMC officials claimed that cases of dengue have increased because of the in-house breeding of the mosquitoes.“We have already controlled the mosquito breeding spots across the city. Now, people should take care they do not let breeding of mosquitoes in their homes,” an NMC official said.
