NASHIK: Ten different city-based organisations including non-governmental organisations are organising a unique green drive on June 24.They will be planting thorny bushes of indigenous variety to prevent dryness of the earth due to scorching sun and will be sowing seeds of indigenous trees.This activity will be carried out in hills/mountains from Pandavleni to Brahmagiri mountain range."The mountain range from Pandavleni to Brahmagiri has become completely barren. Let alone big trees there are no thorny bushes too. This has affected our biodiversity. If greenery is brought back in Gangapur dam and till River Godavari then the city will once again be known as cool and clean city," said an environment activist and one of the organisers, Sunanda Jadhav.These organisations believe that if big trees are planted immediately, then it would be difficult to conserve these. They believe that if thorny bushes are grown first then the land could be prevented from becoming barren and automatically jungle would grow.They are planning to plant local species of bushes and shrubs like karvand, shind, babhul, seetaphal etc and sow seeds of big indigenous trees like moha, teak, neem etc, on experimental basis.Each year they plan to take up one mountain for the seed sowing activity."For this people have to spare only one day in a year. We appeal to people to come with their families, friends and relatives to Anandwan , Chunchale Hill, Ambad MIDC on June 24 from 7.30am to 2pm for this activity. People may bring lunch boxes and participate in this unique picnic in nature," Sunanda appealed. Green Revolution Nashik, Harit Vishwa Group, Nashik IMA, Nashik Cyclists, Social Networking Forum, I-Social Group, Group Seed Sowing Programme, Panchavati Medical Association, Satpur-Ambad Doctors' Association and others are organising and participating in the green drive.
