CLEARED SKHERNashik: Citizens traders , vendors and activists had mixed reactions to the ban on plastic on Saturday as the civic body upped the action. Many are of the opinion that the use should be permitted for certain items.“This is rainy season and we will be using raincoats and umbrellas. Where do we keep these when they get wet,” questioned Mira Arun, an entrepreneur.Pallavi Kulkarni, a housewife, welcomed the ban saying that this move should have been taken years back. “Plastic is harmful for health, besides choking drains and resulting in animal deaths. The plastic ban is a very good thing. The demand for plastic comes from common people,” she said.Social activist Ajit Takke, who has been living in tune with nature and saying no to products harmful for health and environment, said it is not as plastic-free Maharashtra but rather plastic carrybag-free Maharashtra.“The ban is to avoid garbage, which is good decision. But all plastic is not banned. Pre-packed products, tetra pack products are also harmful. They have also permitted thermocol now,” Takke said.Social activist Jagbir Singh who has been crusading against plastic thanked the government for the ban. “This is a good step. Now, the government should ensure strict implementation of the ban. Everyone should support. Cloth bags are available for Rs 10, are durable and last for two years or more. We made 1,000 bags from cotton curtains by villagers in Satana. Alternatives will come up automatically,” Jagbir said.President of Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (MACCIA), Santosh Mandlecha said there was no clarity on the items that have been banned. “Government said plastic packing material will not be banned but we received complaints from our members that they have been penalised. Even the person inspecting the shops does not know what is exactly banned,” he said.
