Dengue cases spike, NMC scanner on breeding sites

NASHIK: The city recorded 52 cases of dengue in June this year, nearly triple the number of cases (19) seen during the same month last year.The municipal corporation’s health department has initiated a drive to destroy mosquito breeding spots across the city. Last month, the Nashik Municipal Corporation destroyed 737 breeding spots in the city. The civic body also fined two builders in Nashik East and Cidco division Rs 15,000 as dengue larvae were found in the water stored at construction sites.Aside from construction sites, tyre shops and garages are also under the scanner of the civic body. The municipal corporation has warned the owners of tyre shops and garages to ensure that rainwater does not accumulate in empty or discarded tyres.In May 2018, the city recorded 18 dengue cases, the same as May last year. June 2018, however, witnessed a jump in the number of dengue cases. “The use of water coolers during the summer increased and many citizens did not drain water from cooler. This also led to a rise in mosquito breeding in the city. Also, the gap in the rainfall led to a rise in mosquito breeding in the city,” said a civic body official.“We have started surveilllance in the city to destroy mosquito breeding spots. We have also increased fumigation and fogging where breeding spots have been found,” said the official.In June this year, the civic body inspected 45,576 houses across the city and found mosquito breeding sites in 626 houses. Of the 74,568 water storage facilities inspected, dengue larvae were found in 737. The NMC also issued notices to 506 houses, establishments and construction sites in June where they found probable mosquito breeding sites. During survey, the NMC identified 130 uncovered sceptic tanks, which have all been covered and repaired now.
