Sri Lankan among two held for duping farmers, traders

Nashik: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the city police arrested a Sri Lankan resident wanted in a case of cheating registered with Adgaon police in August 2017. He is now under the custody of the EOW till July 20.Nagaraj had set up an export firm along with Vijay Chandrashekhar of Selam in Tamil Nadu. He was produced in a city court, which remanded him to police custody till July 20.Sonawane said it is likely that other farmers and traders too had been cheated by Nagraj and Chandrashekhar.

Nashik: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the city police arrested a Sri Lankan resident wanted in a case of cheating registered with Adgaon police in August 2017. The man is accused of making purchases of onions from local producers for export and then vanishing, without paying farmers.The suspect, identified as Sasigaran Nagaraj of Colombo, was arrested from Madurai Airport in Tamil Nadu on July 14. He is now under the custody of the EOW till July 20.Nagaraj had set up an export firm along with Vijay Chandrashekhar of Selam in Tamil Nadu. The export firm was located at Aurangabad Road in the city. The duo bought agricultural produce from farmers and traders for export.ACP Bhagwat Sonawane of EOW said the duo had taken onions and jute bags for transporting them in for Rs 74.14 lakh from three farmers and traders. They had, however, not paid for either the onions or the sacks, and made a quick escape from the city.A complaint was lodged against the duo in August 2017 with the Adgaon police. Vijay Chandrashekhar was arrested, but it took police a while longer to nab the foreigner.ACP Sonawane said Chandrashekhar was released on interim bail to arrange money to pay the farmers and traders he cheated. So far, he has managed to pay Rs 12.75 lakh.EOW of Nashik had issued a ‘lookout’ notice to trace Nagraj. Sonawane said he and PSI Shivaji Kakad of the EOW were constantly in touch with Tamil Nadu police to know if Nagraj was traced.Recently, TN police got information that Nagraj was arriving at Madurai Airport. Police laid a trap for him and detained him at the airport on July 14. EOW branch of Nashik was informed of the detention.Nagraj was formally arrested from Perigudi police station of Madurai district in Tamil Nadu. He was produced in a city court, which remanded him to police custody till July 20.Sonawane said it is likely that other farmers and traders too had been cheated by Nagraj and Chandrashekhar. He appealed to others who fell victim to the duo to approach police.
