Nashik: Civic chief Tukaram Mundhe on Monday pulled up the 13-member committee for being unable to resolve court cases pertaining to the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) for years. He also said that the lawyers would be paid case-wise henceforth rather than as per the hearing. The meeting took place on Monday in the civic chief’s office. In the district court itself there are 1,700-1,800 cases that are pending. Out of these, more than 350 are related to town planning and estate departments. And the worst thing is that the verdict in NMC’s favour is dismal.“Taking this into consideration, Mundhe called for a meeting and instructed heads of all the departments about paying case-wise fees to the lawyers. He said that if lawyers were unable to perform then they may quit the panel as there are many experienced lawyers in the city who are ready to work for the NMC. On the complaints of the lawyers that they did not get the files in time from the NMC, he said henceforth it would be the responsibility of the concerned department heads to furnish the information and files in time,” a civic official said. The civic chief noticed that in important cases, the NMC did not get ruling in its favour or the case was pending for many years. Former civic chief Praveen Gedam also had noticed the discrepancies and had changed the panel of lawyers then for quick results.“The municipal commissioner also indicated on Monday that he was not averse to changing the panel of lawyers if they were not performing and causing loss to the civic body,” the official said.He added that till date lawyers were being paid as per the hearing and that the civic chief felt that this could be one of the reasons for delay. “Henceforth, the civic chief gave strict instruction that lawyers will be paid only case-wise and not as per hearing. This way hopefully cases would be resolved early,” the officer said.
