City artist to paint Namami Gange campaign posters

Nashik: Well-known city artist Shital Sonawane will paint a special series of art works on River Ganga which will be used as campaign material for the ‘Namami Gange’ project.Minister for River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Nitin Gadkari selected Shital for painting this series after hearing her views on River Ganga in an interactive session in Mumbai recently.“Gadkari discussed the Ganga Rejuvenation issue with people of different walks of life. As an artist, I proposed to create greater awareness through my paintings,” said Shital. My idea of portraying Ganga as a woman, expressing grief, was appreciated. She will be painting 30 works depicting Ganga as a woman for this campaign.The Central government will organise exhibitions of the paintings during awareness programmes on river cleanliness across the country.

In the first phase, such exhibitions will be held in cities on the banks of the Ganga; in the second phase, they will be held in prominent cities across the country.“After our first interaction in December last year, Gadkari invited me and we discussed the concepts behind the art works. I have been featuring women’s issues in my work for many years. My idea of portraying Ganga as a woman, expressing grief, was appreciated. I am now at work on the campaign material,” Sonawane said.The National Mission for Clean Ganga or Namami Gange endeavours to deploy the best available knowledge and resources across the world for Ganga rejuvenation.
