Nashik: Muslims will observe the 10th day of Muharram, which is called ‘Ashura’ and is significant in many ways, including the supreme sacrifice of Imam Hussein, on Friday.The community members have stopped taking out ‘tazia’ processions since two years and have been instead observing the day with special prayers, distribution of cold drinks and charity.Many Muslims will also observe fast on Thursday and Friday as per the instructions of Prophet Muhammad.Maulana Syed Nadim, a senior Islamic scholar in the city, said that special prayers will be offered in all the mosques across the city. “Friday will be the 10th of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. Special prayers will be offered on Friday morning,” he said.Lectures by Islamic scholars were organised at Imam Ahmed Raza Chowk, Amin Shah Chowk in Bagwanpura, Nanawali Masjid and many other masjids. Special lectures for women were held in Minara Masjid in Multanpura.A special ‘ijtema’ or congregation will be held on the evening of September 20 for men in Dakhhanpura and Bagwanpura masjids. For women, the ‘ijtema’ will be at Nanawali Durgah, Ayesha Masjid and Chishtiya Colony. Fruits, clothes, and medicines will be also distributed among the needy.Although ‘tazia’ processions will not be taken out, ‘tazias’ in various shapes and colours have been installed across the city ahead of Muharram.“Tazia is supposed to be a replica of Imam Hussein’s tomb and should bear stark resemblance to the actual one,” said a community member.
