Shortage of money halts prisoners’ walk to freedom

One prisoner has a case pending in a court due to which he could not be released. Two others could not be released as they were unable to pay the fine.Manjitsingh Prempalsingh Rathod (28) from Mumbai, who was convicted in August 2016 for theft, has to pay Rs 10,000 as fine. There are many who diligently send money to their families regularly as they earn wages from working at the industrial units on jail premises, though the wages are less than what is given outside, said an official.Superintendent of the prison Rajkumar Sali said, “We have appealed to social social organisations to provide financial aid so that the two inmates could make use of the relief they have been offered and join their families.” If he could not pay the fine, he will have to serve a year more in prison as per the sentence given by the court.Chintaman Dhamankar of Solapur, who was in jail since 2016, has also not been able to arrange Rs 6,000 to pay the fine.The jail authorities said the amount is apparently huge for their families to secure release of their family member.Most of these prisoners come from poor financial background. Nashik: Two of the 10 inmates at the Nashik Road Central Jail, who were given amnesty under a central scheme in commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, are unable to get freedom due to shortage of money which they have to pay as fine.Prisoners who were not involved in offences like murder, attempt to murder, rape, dacoity, etc, and have served 66% of their jail sentence and their conduct has been good, were eligible for the amnesty scheme.Ten prisoners were selected under the scheme by the concerned offices.Senior officials said, among those who managed to pay the fine, one was freed earlier, while six were freed on Friday.
