Nashik: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) of Bhusawal division of Central Railway jointly busted a gang of train robbers.The gang was allegedly involved in cutting the wires of signals to stop trains and then target passengers sitting near the windows by snatching away their purses, gold chains and other valuables. This is the second gang that the security personnel have arrested this month. On October 9, a four-member gang was arrested from Ahmednagar district for robbing passengers in similar fashion.Railway officials said that the RPF and GRP personnel jointly carried out an operation on Thursday night near Khandwa junction in Madhya Pradesh and nabbed the four robbers. There were a total of five people of which the fifth member managed to give the security personnel a slip. All the arrested suspects are residents of Khandwa.“We travelled to that station after being informed that the gang was allegedly conspiring to commit robbery in a train by tampering with the signals. We had information that the gang would target passengers of a train on Thursday night,” an RPF official said.According to railway officials, the security personnel zeroed down on the suspects moving suspiciously near platform 5 of the station.“We had deployed policemen both in uniform and civil dress. When they saw the policemen in uniform the gang members started to flee only to be caught by those in civil dress,” the official said.Police have recovered iron cutter, rods, choppers and knives from the robbers. The suspects have confessed to committing crimes on running trains and getting down at an intended point near a signal. The GRP has booked the four under sections 399 and 402 of the Indian Penal Code.
