Man kills self as daughter elopes

Nashik: Hugely disappointed that his 18-year-old daughter had eloped with her boyfriend, a 48-year-old man consumed poison and committed suicide on Sunday morning in Peth taluka, 70 km from Nashik. Amrut Gangadhar More got to know that his daughter had eloped the next day. He visited the family of the youth who had gone missing with his daughter.More explained that his daughter ought to return home. Police said the man was unable to bear the pressure of social opprobrium to his daughter’s elopement. The man’s son lodged a complaint against 11 people for abetting his father’s suicide.Peth police said the girl, a resident of Pahuchi Bari in Peth taluka, eloped with a man from a neighbouring village on September 25.

The boy’s father refused to intervene, and the man then approached police, with a complaint against the family of the boy.Inspector Liladhar Kanadel of Peth police station said, “The girl eloped with her boyfriend on September 25. On September 30 More came to us saying he wanted to lodge a complaint of kidnapping against the family of the boy she eloped with.”“We asked for the girl’s Aadhaar card. She was over 18 years old. We told him that a complaint of abduction could not be registered. We called the girl and her boyfriend and took a statement from them – the girl told us she had gone with the man of her own accord and was not forced,” inspector Kanadel said.On Sunday, police was informed that More had ended his life. Police said the man was unable to bear the pressure of social opprobrium to his daughter’s elopement. More’s son Nivrutti Gangadhar More lodged a complaint against 11 people for abetting his father’s suicide.
