Kin of 9 farmers to get 1 lakh compensation

Compensation to 19 families was rejected as the suicides were not due to agrarian issues. NASHIK: The Nashik district administration on Tuesday approved compensation to families of nine farmers, who had allegedly committed suicide between August and October this year.The compensation includes Rs 70,000 to be deposited in the bank account of the family and Rs 30,000 to be given in cash. In three other cases, the reports were sent back to the respective tehsildars with queries," district administration officials said.According to the district officials, since January this year, the panel has approved compensation to 26 families and rejected it to 49 families. "Some of the main criteria for taking final decision on granting compensation are crop loss to the farmer, pressure from financial institutes about loan repayment despite crop failure, poor condition of the soil for a substantial period of time," district officials added.

Of the nine bereaved families who were granted compensation, four hail from Kalwan taluka, two from Malegaon taluka and three from Nandgaon taluka.In matters related to farmer's suicide the police, agriculture and revenue departments carry out separate investigations to ascertain the reasons for the farmer to end his life. These three reports are then sent to the respective tehlisdars, who prepare a report and send it to the district administration.A panel headed by district collector Radhakrishnan B scrutinises the reports submitted by the respective tehsildars before taking the final decision. Compensation to 19 families was rejected as the suicides were not due to agrarian issues. The panel is yet to take any decision in 14 cases."Some of the main criteria for taking final decision on granting compensation are crop loss to the farmer, pressure from financial institutes about loan repayment despite crop failure, poor condition of the soil for a substantial period of time," district officials added.
