Nashik: A fire broke out in the Panchasheel Nagar slum on Wednesday morning, killing a 30-year-old woman and gutting as many as five shanties. It took the fire fighters over 90 minutes to douse the flames. The woman killed in the fire has been identified as Sunita Lahoti, a resident of Bhagur. The deceased had come to meet her aunt, identified as Bhagubai Avhad, at Panchasheel Nagar. At the time of the incident, Avhad had gone out to buy vegetables.Chief fire officer Sanjay Bairagi said they got a call about the fire at 1.03pm. “We reached the incident spot within couple of minutes as the slum is located very close to the fire station. By the time we reached the spot, Lahoti was found dead in one of the shanties.”Meanwhile, due to the congested locality and no road to take the fire-tenders inside the slum, the fire tenders had to be parked on the main road from where the hose had to be taken to the fire spot — around 450 feet.Bairagi said that the shanties that got damaged in the fire were next to one another and were partitioned using wooden logs and other temporary material. The fire was extinguished by 2.30pm.The fire official said that there no gas cylinder or stove found in the house. Thus, the woman was apparently cooking and the stove exploded which led to her death. While the woman started crying for help from inside her house, the neighbours could not get into the house as it was locked from inside. The fire spread to the neighbouring shanties and that too was locked as the occupants were out for work. The slum dwellers started throwing water on the house from outside. But as the flames continued to increase further, they called the fire brigade.“A total five fire tenders were deployed and over 20 firemen toiled hard for over 90 minutes to douse the fire,” Bairagi said, adding there are over 450 shanties in the Panchasheel Nagar.
