Traders from other states buy onions from Maharashtra and export them from ports in other states.”“Moreover, dependency of other states on Maharashtra’s onions for export purpose has also reduced. The state had exported 5.65 lakh tonnes of onions earning foreign currencies worth Rs 692 crore during during the same period of the previous fiscal.As per official data, there has been 40% rise in onion production in the states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, which led to rise in onion export from these states and the country, leaving Maharashtra behind. This is another reason that the export from Maharashtra has reduced during April-August period of 2018-19,” said Jain.Sources from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) said that the country’s onion export during April-August period of the current financial year stood at 8.31 lakh tonnes, fetching foreign currencies worth Rs 1,171.69 crore.The country had exported 7.95 lakh tonnes of onions during the corresponding period in 2017-18, fetching Rs 1,910 crore.Maharashtra state exported 5.27 lakh tonnes of onions worth Rs 753.18 crore during April-August period of current fiscal. Nashik: The major onion exporting state of Maharashtra has witnessed a drop of 7% in exports during April-August of the current financial year, while as the nataional exports has increased by 5% during the same period.Although the quality of summer onions of Maharashtra was good, but factors like change of ports for shipment from Mumbai to other ports in Gujrat and Chennai along with less dependency on Maharashtra onions led to the drop in export from the state.Mohit Jain, an onion trader said, “There is a possibility that change in port, from where onions were dispatched, from Mumbai to other ports in Gujarat or Chennai led to decrease in the exports from the Maharastra.
