Nature expert smart city officials to hold meeting

Nashik: The first appeal officer and deputy municipal commissioner has directed the smart city officials to hold a meeting with environmentalist Devang Jani to discuss about Aruna and Godavari projects under smart city.Jani had sought information about Aruna river that meets Godavari at Panchavati through an RTI application in October. Not satisfied by the NMC’s reply, Jani filed first appeal giving references of the river being mentioned in official documents. The civic administration replied that it did not have any information about the river on its records. On the other hand they are planning to divert the river towards Godavari through a pipeline.

A hearing was conducted by first appeal officer, deputy municipal commissioner, NMC’s RTI officer and Panchavati division officer along with Jani.Recently, the first appeal officer instructed the concerned department to gather information about the river and also directed the smart city officials to have a meeting with Jani on the issue.“NMC officers had said that Aruna river was not in their record. On the other hand they are planning to divert the river towards Godavari through a pipeline. But, they do not even know where the river is. It has been completely concretised,” Jani said.He said that the confluence of Aruna and Godavari is significant in Kumbh Mela that the city hosts every 12 years. He added that Aruna and Varuna (Waghadi) has been mentioned in Nashik gazetteer of 1883 (Bombay Presidency Gazetteer, Nashik 1883). Aruna river has been shown in the city survey year 1917 DLR map.Jani had asked five questions in his RTI – how much water comes out of Aruna Gomukh in Ramkund daily, length, breadth and depth of Aruna, detailed information about construction on riverbed from Ramkund to the origin of Aruna, detailed information about construction on river bank from Ramkund to the origin of Aruna and where can citizens see Aruna riverbed. But, the NMC said it did not have information in its records.“Smart city officials and the environmentalist will have a meeting at a pre-decided date and time to discuss the issue,” said an NMC official.
