Nashik: Two farmers from Satana taluka dumped 30 quintal of onions on the road on Wednesday afternoon to vent out their anger and frustration for being offered a paltry amount of Rs 1.50 per kg for their produce at the APMC market.Hence, rather than selling the produce at the APMC, Ravindra Birari of Kandane village and Prashant Mahajan of Dhandari village dumped the onions on the road. “I was offered a wholesale rate of Rs1.50 per kg that made me frustrated. I brought my produce back and threw all the 17 quintal of onions on the road,” Birari said.According to him, the production cost of onions is around Rs9 per kg. “How can we sell it at such a low price? It is having a bad impact on our financial condition. We cannot sustain ourselves by selling onions at this cost,” he added.Mahajan threw around 13 quintal of his produce as he too was angry by the rate offered to him.Bhaskar Tambe, secretary of Satana APMC, said the demand for summer onions have declined hugely that has led to drop in wholesale summer onion prices.“Such scenario prevails in all APMCs across the district. The arrival of fresh kharif onions has increased which has reduced the demand for summer onions that are six months old,” Tambe said.According to him, farmers still have huge stock of summer onions in their storage in Satana taluka which is estimated at around 2 lakh quintal.“Around a fortnight ago, the onion traders had urged us to stop auction of summer onions as there is no demand for the produce.
