City hosts first 1,200-km brevet cycling event

Nashik: The city hosted its first ever 1,200-km cycling Brevet des Randonneurs Mondiaux on Thursday morning. Ten riders from different cities participated in the event, which is to be completed within 90 hours. The route for the cycling event is from Nashik to Bhopal and back.Brevet is recognised by (Audax Club Parisien) France. BRM Nashik was started in April 2014 by Mahendra Mahajan.

Nashik: The city hosted its first ever 1,200-km cycling Brevet des Randonneurs Mondiaux on Thursday morning. Ten riders from different cities participated in the event, which is to be completed within 90 hours. The route for the cycling event is from Nashik to Bhopal and back.Brevet is recognised by (Audax Club Parisien) France. BRM Nashik was started in April 2014 by Mahendra Mahajan. “It is by far one of the longest distance of Brevet for which 90 hours of total time is allocated. It includes sleeping time as well. The clock once started, does not stop before 90 hours of the race,” he said.“Riders have to reach all the control points within cut-off time, otherwise they will be disqualified. It is a test of physical and mental endurance for riders,” he said, adding, “The riders will have to manage with minimal sleep, sitting on saddle for such long hours also causes saddle sores, nights are going to be cold and afternoons will be hot in MP,” Mahajan added.The riders include Ashish Bhattad, Chandrabhan Palve, Balasaheb Wakchaure, Himanshu Thuse and Nilesh Wakchaure from Nashik; Amol Kanawade, Vijay Sanap and Ajit Mane from Pune; Siddharth Bhamare and Satish Sharma from Mumbai. Yeshwant Mudholkar is marshaling the event.“Historically, 1,200 BRM is being organised in France since 1931, which is called the PBP (Paris Brest Paris).” Mahendra said.The event is famous worldwide. It is organised after every four years and the next one is in August 2019.So the Nashik’s 1,200 BRM will serve as a good practice for those aspiring to participate in the PBP.
