Nashik: Farmers will soon be able to update records about crop sown in their field through smart phones. “Farmers will be able to send a message from a smart phone to the central data base with information about the crop sown in the fields and can also upload pictures of the same,” Shashikant Mangrule, deputy collector, Nashik district said. The system is being planned to ensure farmers enrol their crop themselves, in a way that they will be responsible for any delay in updating their records with the government.“A number of times, there are allegations that the talathi (village level accountant of the revenue department) has failed to update crop records for farmers. In case of agrarian crisis and help from government, these farmers are deprived of benefits. The new system will hold farmers as well as the talathi responsible for any delay,” the officer said.A pilot project is being implemented in Dindori taluka, which is predominantly tribal and where farmers face challenges in using technology. There is also a problem of poor connectivity because of the hilly terrain. Dindori is one of six talukas selected from each of the revenue divisions.Explaining the concept, the officer said several farmers of an area will be pooled together to form a group. One of their mobile numbers would be registered with the system. All information coming in from registered mobile numbers will be entered in the data base during the given window period. Pictures will also have to be uploaded and they will be captured through an application that has been finalized. The picture will take the global positioning coordinates in consideration to ensure accuracy of the location. The talathi then will have to physically verify the extent of sowing in the farm.In case of agrarian crisis of any nature, the same application will be able to feed information on real-time basis and aid the government in finalising a compensation plan at a relatively faster pace.
