State yet to utilise Centre’s grant of Rs 5,000 crore: Union minister

Now, across the country we have about 60,000 houses that were yet to get power and most of them are in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. About 2.55 crore houses did not have power connections. Nashik: The union minister of state for power and renewable energy RK Singh on Wednesday turned down the state government’s demand of Rs2,000 crore saying the state government was yet to fully consume the grant of Rs5,000 crore that has already been given.“I was going through the papers about grants given to the state government by Centre and saw that a large section of funds of Rs5,000 crore given were yet to be consumed. While Chandrashekhar Bawankule (state minister for energy) has demanded additional funds, I promised to give it provided the existing funds allocated were fully consumed,” Singh said.Singh was addressing a gathering at the foundation stone laying programme for Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) at Shilapur village on the outskirts of Nashik.

The CPRI was sanctioned in the year 2013, but was delayed allegedly due to land issues.He added that the CPRI laboratory would bring prosperity in the region. “The setting up of an internationally recognised institution will be most beneficial for the electrical industries, thus bringing in employment and business in the region,” the minister said.The union government has also decided that there will be no load shedding in in any areas of the country at any point in time after March 2019 and its responsibility will be on the power distribution companies.“We are now assuring continuous power to every consumer of the country from April 2019 and it means there will be no load shedding at all. If that happens, the distribution company will be penalised and that amount will be reimbursed into the account of the consumers,” Singh said.Over the massive electrification programme undertaken across the country, the minister said that the Centre took massive programme to provide power 18,700 villages and this was done in a short span of 987 days.“This government also ensured every house got electricity before March 2019. About 2.55 crore houses did not have power connections. Now, across the country we have about 60,000 houses that were yet to get power and most of them are in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. But we are sure we will cover them as well before the deadline,” the minister said.Stating that country was now power surplus, the minister said India was exporting power to Bangladesh, Myanmar and Nepal and talks are on to export power to Sri Lanka as well.“We have added 1 lakh MW of power generation capacity as a result of which we are now exporting electricity,” Singh said.
