Cams fail to rein in motorists violating underpass rules

Nashik: The cameras at the Indiranagar underpass are failing to deter motorists to enter the structure from the wrong side. Since then, the cameras have clicked pictures of over 500 motorists who entered the underpass from the wrong side. With rising awareness about the AI system and the possible police action the number of such motorists have reduced to some amount. The AI system has also automatically sent these pictures to the police server.Senior officials of the city traffic branch said that in the first three days, the AI system had clicked over 175 pictures. The violation of the no entry rule happens between 9 pm to 9 am in the absence of the police.

Nashik: The cameras at the Indiranagar underpass are failing to deter motorists to enter the structure from the wrong side. The warning hooter is also falling on deaf ears as motorists in large number continue to enter the underpass from the Govind Nagar side, from where the entry is restricted.Police set up an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system at the Indiranagar underpass that would click photos of errant motorist entering the underpass from the wrong side. The system installed on January 26. Since then, the cameras have clicked pictures of over 500 motorists who entered the underpass from the wrong side. The AI system has also automatically sent these pictures to the police server.Senior officials of the city traffic branch said that in the first three days, the AI system had clicked over 175 pictures. With rising awareness about the AI system and the possible police action the number of such motorists have reduced to some amount. Yet, over the past two weeks, more than 500 motorists have been captured by the three cameras, which clearly captures the registration numbers on the vehicles.Officials said that with the help of the registration number of the vehicle, they can trace the owner for subsequent action.DCP Laxmikant Patil (Zone 1) said, “We have decided to start taking action against errant motorists. The violation of the no entry rule happens between 9 pm to 9 am in the absence of the police. The violation is done by motorists as well as school van drivers. We will start taking action immediately from now. Apart from the fine for violating the no-entry rule, motorists will also be fine if they are not using helmet if driving bikes and if their number plate is not as per the standards set by the transport department.”
