Patient on dialysis jumps to death from hospital

Nashik: In the second such incident in less than a month, a patient on dialysis jumped to his death from the third floor of the regional referral hospital at Shalimar on Saturday morning. Doctors said such incidents leave staff in trauma and affect other patients too.On January 12, a 52-year-old patient on dialysis at the referral hospital committed suicide by jumping from the third floor. The man acted without warning, pulling the tubes out of his body and rushing to the window to jump off. Normal creatinine level in blood is from .8 to 1.4 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl) of blood; his creatinine level was 11.”The patient had undergone dialysis in four sessions over the past nine days. Medical Superintendent VB Nampalli said, “Gupta was suffering from chronic kidney disease and was admitted here on January 31.

A patient had plucked the tubes out of his body and plunged out of the window of this hospital on January 12 too.On Saturday, Jawaharlal Ramkisan Gupta (48), a resident of Ghoti, 40 km from here, committed suicide. His wife had arrived with him for treatment. Medical Superintendent VB Nampalli said, “Gupta was suffering from chronic kidney disease and was admitted here on January 31. Both his kidneys were badly damaged. Normal creatinine level in blood is from .8 to 1.4 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl) of blood; his creatinine level was 11.”The patient had undergone dialysis in four sessions over the past nine days. The fourth dialysis was performed on Friday. On Saturday, Gupta had breakfast at around 8.30 am and had gone out on walk with his wife. On coming back to the ward on the third floor at around 10.30 am, he simply walked towards a window and jumped down.A patient in the adjoining bed said he thought Gupta was leaning out of the window to spit. But he just threw himself out. “Staff was left with no reaction time,” Dr Nampalli said.The nephrology ward has 30 beds. At the time of the incident, there were two nurses and two ward boys present on duty, but it all happened so suddenly that staff was left stunned. Doctors said such incidents leave staff in trauma and affect other patients too.On January 12, a 52-year-old patient on dialysis at the referral hospital committed suicide by jumping from the third floor.
