I-T raids on doctors' premises unearth Rs 50-crore assets so far

NASHIK: The Income Tax (I-T) officials have so far recovered unaccounted income worth Rs50 crore during the on-going raids at around 40 premises belonging to 20 doctors in Nashik This includes unaccounted cash of Rs10 crore, jewellery, investments and other assets. “It will take a time to find out the total amount of the unaccounted income or assets. “These doctors are involved in cut practice which is really a matter of grave concern. Sources in the department have also seized unaccounted receipts along with various other documents during the raids that continued on the third consecutive day on Friday.“We have found evidence of cut practice and cut referral practice by these doctors. We have seized unaccounted receipts and documents at large from 40 premises of these doctors across three cities,” an I-T official said.“Analysis of the documents is delaying our operation that may continue till Saturday night.

A total of 225 officials from the I-T departments in Pune, Mumbai, Aurangabad and Nashik have been divided in team for carrying out the raids,” he added.The taxmen are targeting professionals like doctors, lawyers and builders who have not paid tax on their total income. “These doctors are involved in cut practice which is really a matter of grave concern. We are appealing to the doctors to not get involved in cut practice,” the official said.In Nashik, searches are being conducted on 20 premises of 10 doctors while 20 places belonging to another 20 doctors in Jalgaon and Dhule districts are also being searched.The I-T had information that these all doctors are evading tax and not paying taxes on their complete income. “It will take a time to find out the total amount of the unaccounted income or assets. We have seized documents from these doctors which are also to be inspected to ascertain whether they have concealed their income and the amount of unaccounted wealth,” the official said.The Nashik region of I-T covers four districts of North Maharashtra — Nashik, Dhule, Jalgaon and Nandurbar districts — and eight districts of Marathwada, Aurangabad, Beed, Jalana, Osmanabad, Nanded, Latur, Parbhani, Hingoli.
