NMC gets lessons in running bus service, London style

Nashik: A team of World Bank officials gave a presentation to civic officials in Mumbai on smooth and technologically sound city bus service.Officials from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Navi Mumbai and Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) were present for the meeting that was organised by the state government on Tuesday.A committee formed by the government will take a call on whether they will be taking assistance from the World Bank and if yes then of what kind.Citing the example of London that has a robust bus service, the World Bank representatives said that they were prepared to give all kind of support needed for the project. Representatives from the London-based transport company were also present.“The transport commissioner had discussions about city bus service with officers from Navi Mumbai and NMC. The bus service is managed through modern technology and hence there are no conductors or other employees,” a civic official said.Civic chief Radhakrishna Game said that the government committee would take a call on whether to take the assistance from World Bank.“Such decisions are taken through agreements between the state and central governments. As of now only discussions have taken place. One committee has been established at the government level and it will suggest how to go about it, which option to take or what is to be done,” Game said.He added that this committee was established for studying the projects and give expert suggestions. “All proposals go to the committee that studies them and advises for which projects assistance should be taken from the World Bank when to seek help from Nabard and when to seek help from state or central government,” Game said.
