Nashik: There are at least 12 points in city sewers where drain water is seeping into tributaries of River Godavari, environmentalists told the civic administration. Tributaries of Godavari, Rivers Nandini and Waghadi, are being polluted by the water from sewers, environmentalists said. The environmentalists and activists are visiting different localities each week to point to the administration areas from where sewer water is draining into the river system. Godavari Conservation Cell of NMC said it has now taken note of the matter raised by environmentalists. They said about half the problems that the environmentalists pointed out have already been fixed, and work is on to plug the leak at other places.Environmentalists visited Mhasrul, Dindori Road and surrounding places to check polluting factors of the river. They have been visiting different localities each week and pointing leaks to the administration.“We are visiting areas near the tributaries to check river pollution. We have brought leakages in the chambers to the notice of the civic administration. We have informed them about 12 leaking chambers that are polluting water in Rivers Nandini and Waghadi,” said Nishikant Pagare, activist and one of the petitioners in the River Godavari pollution case.He said the area near Laxman Jhula where Waghadi flows has many leaky chambers. “In one case at Mhasrul, cow dung from a dairy was released directly into the river. We noticed it and informed civic officials, who intervened to stop it. They have also stopped leaks in other cases. The problem, though, is that this is work the civic administration should be doing of its own. Instead, it only acts when we first bring a leak to its notice,” Pagare said. The environmentalists expressed dismay that plastic and open sewer lines were common problems. The historic Seeta Sarovar was found filled with plastic waste and dirty water. “This pond has natural live streams. It is now in a very bad condition,” Pagare said. The activists plan to clean Seeta Sarovar area next week and explore more such places to inspect, so the civic administration can be alerted to unchecked causes of pollution. “We have stopped leakage and seepage of dirty water from chambers in five or six places. We are working on the other cases. In a day or two, we should be able to address the issue of all the chambers,” an NMC official told TOI.
