Villagers spot leopard, trap set up in Pathardi

Nashik: The forest department installed a cage at Vadicharan, Pathardi, after residents said they had seen a leopard. In the past two days, residents of Vadicharan, Pathardi have been hearing the growls of a leopard. Officials however say the leopard could not have strayed to this location from Deolali or Nashik Road. Meanwhile, a leopard that injured a youth on a motor cycle in Makhmalabad a few months back has also not been trapped. Instances of leopards in urban areas have been on the rise.“We installed the cage on Saturday in the farm of one Tushar Demse.

Nashik: The forest department installed a cage at Vadicharan, Pathardi, after residents said they had seen a leopard. In the past two days, residents of Vadicharan, Pathardi have been hearing the growls of a leopard. A few people said they had even seen it, and demanded that the forest department step in and remove the animal.On Saturday, forest officials visited the spot and installed a cage after conducting an inspection to confirm the presence of the leopard. Instances of leopards in urban areas have been on the rise.“We installed the cage on Saturday in the farm of one Tushar Demse. Residents of this locality had complained to us. Few said that they had spotted a leopard. Our officials visited the spot and found some truth to the claims of the people,” an officer of the forest department told TOI.Officials have warned people to be cautious and avoid going out in the dark. Officials however say the leopard could not have strayed to this location from Deolali or Nashik Road. If the animal is either caught in the cage or spotted by villagers, officals have asked them to inform forest authorities immediately, without panicking.Leopards have earlier been spotted at Nashik Road and Deolali. Cages had been installed in these localities, although no leopard has yet been trapped. Meanwhile, a leopard that injured a youth on a motor cycle in Makhmalabad a few months back has also not been trapped. These areas have farmlands, where leopards find easy prey and vast sugarcane fields that offer perfect cover.“When people crowd around the leopard, it is disturbed and fears it will be attacked. When a leopard is seen, instead of informing other people, the witnesses should call us immediately to avoid confusion for the animal and an unnecessary commotion,” a forest official said.
