Dropped BJP MP’s son likely to take on Sujay Vikhe Patil

By: Ranjan DasguptaNASHIK: Thirty-seven-year-old Suvendra, son of Ahmednagar BJP MP Dilip Gandhi, has announced that he will be contesting the Lok Sabha elections as an Independent candidate. "There is pressure on me to contest the Lok Sabha elections. Instead, Sujay, son of senior Congress leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, was given the ticket. "Although Gandhi's influence in the constituency is limited, Suvendra's decision could benefit the NCP as he would eat into the traditional BJP votes," said a BJP leader.

By: Ranjan DasguptaNASHIK: Thirty-seven-year-old Suvendra, son of Ahmednagar BJP MP Dilip Gandhi, has announced that he will be contesting the Lok Sabha elections as an Independent candidate. The announcement came after a meeting of the Gandhi loyalists in Ahmednagar on Sunday. Both the father and son were present at the meeting. "There is pressure on me to contest the Lok Sabha elections. I am also a ' chowkidar ' of the party and it is my duty to see that outsiders do not rule the roost in Ahmednagar," Suvendra told TOI.The Gandhi camp within the BJP is peeved with the high command for denying a ticket to Dilip, a three-time MP. Instead, Sujay, son of senior Congress leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, was given the ticket. Vikhe-Patil hails from Shirdi, which does not fall under the Ahmednagar Lok Sabha constituency."I am confident that voters of Ahmednagar would vote for me as they appreciate the good work done by my father for 15 years," Suvendra said. He denied he was contesting the polls since his father was not given the ticket.Meanwhile, Dilip Gandhi said he would try and convince his son not to contest the polls. "As a loyal party worker, I would work for the BJP nominee in Ahmednagar," he said.Some local BJP leaders said Suvendra's decision to contest the polls was a not good news for the party."Although Gandhi's influence in the constituency is limited, Suvendra's decision could benefit the NCP as he would eat into the traditional BJP votes," said a BJP leader.
