Local leaders said that the move would make it an easy contest for BJP to retain the seat.Manikrao was frantically trying for a ticket to his son and had even gone to Delhi and met Congress president Rahul Gandhi and othertop party leaders in February this year. Although the senior Gavit could not be reached, Bharat told TOI that his father is ‘pained’ that he was not given the ticket. “I have made up my mind to contest the polls as an independent. I will take a final decision after a meeting with my supporters at Nandurbar in the next couple of days,” said Bharat, who is a Zilla Parishad member.Manikrao has the distinction of winning the Nandurbar Lok Sabha polls nine times in a row. He was close to the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and worked as a Union minister under her. However, in 2014, he was defeated by a young BJP woman candidate, Heena Gavit.“My father would like to question the leadership that if the sons of many other senior Congress leaders can get the ticket to contest polls, why am I being deprived. He has been a faithful Congress worker since 1960. He is extremely pained that despite his closeness with the Gandhi family, he could not manage the ticket for his son,” added Bharat.The decision of Bharat to contest the polls is sending alarm bells in the Congress camp. Manikrao has his own vote bank in at least three assembly segments of Nandurbar, Nawapur and Sakri.“We think that the better option for Bharat would be to take a plunge in the electoral battle in this general election and based on the results he can plan his future political career,” remarked Bharat’s loyalists.
