NASHIK: The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) is expected to deliver power bills at least 15 days before the due date. However, consumers of Bhadrakali and Mumbai Naka areas were puzzled to receive their bills a day after the last day of payment mentioned on the bill."I received my electricity bill on Thursday (April 20) and the last date to make the payment was Wednesday (April 19). I don't know how I'll pay the bill as I will be charged for delayed payment," said Shreekant Tamboli , a resident of Old Nashik area.Ragini Patil, a resident of Bhadrakali, also received the bill after due date. "The MSEDCL never delivers the bills on time. This is not the first instance. The bill generation date is different, and on most occasions bills are received only a day before the due date. Paying bills is not the issue, but the problem is about managing things on time. If we get the bills late, how does the company expect us to be prompt in terms of making the payment," Ragini said. The bill delivery boy, on condition of anonymity, said, "I have no role in the delay. The job has been outsourced to us. We received the bills on the night of April 19. We opposed to distribute the bills unless due dates were changed, but nobody paid heed to our demands."MSEDCL officials, however, played down the incident and pointed out that the bills are also available online and on emails. "The payment procedure can be initiated by the consumers without relying on the physical bill," said an official.Countering the same, Vilas Deole , a consumer activist, said, "Not all people are tech-savvy. Those who are, they don't wait for the physical bill. However, those who are not tech-savvy cannot be taken for granted by the company. The bills have to be delivered well in advance. If you are paying somebody for the job then why can't it be done in time?" Deole asked. The MSEDCL officials, however, said due dates of all delayed bills were extended by five days to facilitate the people. The extension was written on the bills. "We have written a note on the bills informing consumers about the extension of due date by five days," a senior officer from the MSEDCL said. The officer also pointed out that there were chances that the collection centres may not be responding to the direction on the bills, but the consumer would be refunded their amount in the next bills."We will be writing to the Information Technology (IT) department of our company that will process the discount while generating the bill for the next month. So, the consumers will not be affected at all," the officer said.
