Satana women set liquor shop on fire

NASHIK: More than 150 women and around 50 men set a country liquor shop afire in Satana, about 100km from here, on Saturday morning. "Meanwhile, the women staged a rasta roko at Tarhabad Chowk to protest the presence of a liquor shop in their town. There were no casualties in the incident, but the owner of the liquor shop was injured after he was beaten up by the agitating mob. A mob of over 200 people, including women and men, marched to the liquor shop around 8am on Saturday and started ransacking it. When the Satana police rushed to the spot and tried to control the situation, the women got even more furious and set the shop on fire.

The Satana police were in the process of registering a complaint in this regard till late in the night.With most of the liquor shops near highways being closed following the ban imposed on them recently, the liquor shop, which was at a distance from from the highway, had started receiving a large number of tipplers every day.The increasing visitors to the shop had become a menace to women with people under the influence of alcohol passing comments on them. A mob of over 200 people, including women and men, marched to the liquor shop around 8am on Saturday and started ransacking it. When the Satana police rushed to the spot and tried to control the situation, the women got even more furious and set the shop on fire. A refrigerator and an LPG cylinder kept inside the shop exploded in the fire.A fire tender, which was rushed to the spot, was stopped by the protesting women. Bashir Shaikh, in charge of the Satana police station said, "The women were apparently instigated by other people. We are investigating the case. The process of registering a complaint is underway. The people concerned will be booked for attempt to murder the owner of the shop, Bhausaheb Suryawanshi."Meanwhile, the women staged a rasta roko at Tarhabad Chowk to protest the presence of a liquor shop in their town. They refused to move until they got an assurance from the excise department officials about the closure of the shop. Finally, Nayab Tehsildar Deepak Dhivare assured to take the necessary action after which the agitation was withdrawn.
