First onion consignment reaches Delhi from Lasalgaon

"The first consignment of onions with 21 metric tonnes left from Lasalgaon on Friday night and reached Delhi on Sunday. In retail markets too, onions are being sold in the range of Rs 25-40 per kg in retail markets across the country. "The onions procured from Lasalgeon at an average wholesale rate of Rs 17 per kg and it may cost at around Rs 22-23 per kg in Delhi after transporting. Centre is procuring onions through NAFED under the Price Stability Funds (PSF).On an average one to two truckloads of onions would be despatched to Delhi on daily basis. NASHIK: The first consignment of onions of 21 metric tons from Lasalgaon in Nashik has reached Delhi on Sunday.The move by Union government to procure onions from Lasalgaon comes in wake of high prices of the product in Delhi markets The government has decided to procure onions from Lasalgaon through its agency National Agricultural Co-operative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) in a bid to overcome the scarcity of onions. Centre is procuring onions through NAFED under the Price Stability Funds (PSF).On an average one to two truckloads of onions would be despatched to Delhi on daily basis."The first consignment of onions with 21 metric tonnes left from Lasalgaon on Friday night and reached Delhi on Sunday. The onions are being procured at Lasalgaon APMC at the prevailing market rates," said an official from NAFED.A government official told TOI that presently prices of onions is hovering at around Rs 35 per kg in retail markets of Delhi."The onions procured from Lasalgeon at an average wholesale rate of Rs 17 per kg and it may cost at around Rs 22-23 per kg in Delhi after transporting. Hence, we have plans to sell the produce through outlets of Mother Dairy on no profit no loss basis," informed a government official.The sources hinted that the commodity could be sold at around Rs 25 per kg at the Mother Dairy's Safal outlets.Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Private Limited is a subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).The average wholesale onion prices shot up from Rs 450 per quintal to Rs 2,450 per quintal in just two-three months following scarcity of onions in other states of the country. Despite huge stock of onions with farmers in Maharashtra, the demand for the produce in pockets like Nashik, Pune and Ahmednagar increased from other states.The retail prices of onions, which were about Rs 10-15 per kg in various parts of the country during May end, gradually increased to Rs 35-50 per kg.It was that this juncture the government started exploring the possibilities of procuring onions and had sent its two member team to Lasalgaon on August 18 to ascertain whether farmers were getting the price rise benefits.Meanwhile, the average wholesale onion prices have dropped to Rs 17 per kg at Lasalgaon. In retail markets too, onions are being sold in the range of Rs 25-40 per kg in retail markets across the country.
