Nashik: For the first time at Krishithon, stalls have been set up by private firms to create awareness among farmers about the right manner in which pesticides should be sprayed in the fields.The move comes in after the recent death of 20 farmers in Yawatmal due to inhaling of poisonous fumes while spraying pesticides.The five-day agricultural expo 'Krishithon: 2017' is being held at Thakkar's Dome, housing around 300 stalls of various companies that deal in farming technology and innovations. Some private companies have taken the initiative to guide farmers on what precautions they should take while spraying pesticides.These private firms, guiding farmers on how to spray pesticides, have also expressed the need that government should provide safety kits at concessional rates so that they may use the kits, while spraying pesticides in their farms."We have set up a stall specially to guide farmers on how to handle pesticides and spray it correctly. Farmers should use safety kits while spraying pesticides. They should use safety gears like hand gloves, safety goggles, cap, masks and gumboots. They must also use the right quantity of pesticides as per the quantum decided by the pesticide firms," said Vijay Saindane, an official from the private firm."Most importantly farmers should always keep in mind the direction of air. They should not spray pesticide against the air as it would ensure the chemical does not come on their body," Saindane added.Nitin Karde, another official from the private firm, said, "Farmers should use safety kits while spraying pesticides. Moreover, pesticide companies should also provide information on technical spraying of pesticides to farmers. Some companies are giving safety kits with the products to farmers, other pesticide companies should also need to take the initiative."He added, "The government needs to launch a campaign for state farmers on proper use of pesticides. Moreover, government should also provide safety kits to farmers at concessional rates."
