GREATER NOIDA: A woman who had gone to relieve herself in a field on Monday morning found her six-month old daughter dead after returning home and her husband and other relatives missing.Police said though an autopsy revealed she had died of asphyxiation, there was no sign of strangulation or any external injury. The woman, Geeta Devi , has lodged a police complaint.Police said Geeta lived with her husband, Bablu Kumar , their daughter Awni , sister-in-law Rajni and mother-in-law Kala Devi in a single-storey house in Ecotech III area. Geeta had married Bablu four years ago. “The woman lived in a joint family with her husband, sister-in-law Rajni and mother-in-law Kala Devi. In the morning, the woman had gone out to the field to relieve herself. When she returned, she found her daughter dead,” said Farmood Ali Pundir, the SHO of Dankaur police station.Geeta panicked after she found the baby motionless and launched a search for her husband, who was missing along with his mother and sister. She dialed 100 and reported the matter to police.Awni was the first child of the couple. Geeta suggested her in-laws had wanted a boy and she had had some differences with them in this regard. Police said prima facie it appeared the baby had put something in her mouth and it got stuck. “It seems the infant died due to asphyxiation since there was no one to help her at that time. We will send a team again to their house to question the family members. We will take action against them if we find some evidence of their involvement in the crime,” Pundir said.Pundir said there was no injury marks on the infant’s body. “Geeta has alleged foul play and suspect roles of her in-laws in the infant’s death. Her in-laws later returned home and said they had also gone to the field at the time of incident. The post-mortem report says that the infant had died of asphyxiation. The report does not mention any sign of strangulation or other injury,” Pundir said.He said the police had received the complaint and were investigating the matter.
