Two illegal abortion centres raided

NOIDA: The health department on Monday recovered medicines and equipment used to terminate pregnancies from two women running unregistered abortion and delivery centres in Gautampuri colony in Dadri. The move came after a complaint was submitted on Tehsil Divas.The women Reena Lal and Zareena Bilayat have been running these centres in the colony for over a decade. Equipment including injections, equipment, glucose bottles and used blood-soaked gloves were recovered from the two homes. Both of them have no medical degree or diploma in medicine but could only produce certificates for short-term courses of training in hospitals for ‘child care’.According to a complaint received from a resident, the women had been performing illegal abortions on girls and women.“These women operate from their homes in the colony and throw the aborted fetuses into the drains,” reads the complaint dated June 19.Medical superintendent of Dadri CHC Dr Amit Kumar told TOI that he, a pharmacist and two nurses raided the spot at 11 am on Monday along with two constables. While Zareena told officials that she had been running the centre for the past 15 years, Reena had been running her centre for the nearly 10 years.When their registration documents are with the health department were sought, Zareena produced a 30-day training certificate form primary health centre in Meerut which said that she underwent an aya training programme while Reena showed a certificate from a primary health centre in Hathras that said that she was trained in child care for one-year and could advise pregnant women and conduct delivery.CMO Dr Anurag Bhargava said ayas could not perform abortions and deliveries in such an unregistered set-up.An FIR is yet to be lodged.
