UP banks ontechnology to curb poaching

NOIDA: The state government is all set to use cutting-edge technologies to fight wildlife poaching. The meeting was attended by principal chief conservator of forests Kwan Kumar and conservator of Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, HV Girish.“Poaching, trafficking and cross-border smuggling are some of the issues that we are widely trying to tackle. Some of the steps we’ going to implement through Wildlife Crime Control Bureau are — DNA analysis, acoustic traps, thermal imaging, advanced analytics and mapping, spatial monitoring and reporting tool, and GPS-enabled cameras,” said Girish. We are looking forward to implementing world-class technology in the state to prevent wildlife crimes,” Girish told TOI. Uttar Pradesh has registered the highest wildlife crime rate in the country in recent years.On Tuesday, the Uttar Pradesh Wildlife Crime Control Bureau held a meeting with 20 technology companies in Noida, where it invited their technological support for controlling wildlife crime in the state.

The meeting was attended by principal chief conservator of forests Kwan Kumar and conservator of Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, HV Girish.“Poaching, trafficking and cross-border smuggling are some of the issues that we are widely trying to tackle. We are looking forward to implementing world-class technology in the state to prevent wildlife crimes,” Girish told TOI. “Attendees have been asked to come up with solutions within a month,” he added.Some of the key areas in which the tech-participants have been asked to contribute are — prevention of wildlife from poachers, crime data analysis, technology in investigation process, protection and conservation of wildlife habitat from illicit tree-felling and encroachments, monitoring of human intrusion etc.“There are multiple ways in which technology can control wildlife crime and we want to implement all of them. Some of the steps we’ going to implement through Wildlife Crime Control Bureau are — DNA analysis, acoustic traps, thermal imaging, advanced analytics and mapping, spatial monitoring and reporting tool, and GPS-enabled cameras,” said Girish.
