NOIDA: Noida Authority on Tuesday inked a pact with an Indo-Korean venture to set up a waste remediation plant in the city. This comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting South Korean President Moon Jae-in inaugurated Samsung’s plant in Sector 81, dubbed the world’s largest cellphone factory.RK Mishra, additional CEO of Noida Authority, told TOI the agreement was signed with Tamil Nadu-based Zigma Global Environ Solutions for segregation, treatment and recycling of waste in city for two years. This plant will be different from the waste-to-energy plant earlier proposed in Sector 123.While the waste-to-energy plant needs larger infrastructure and a permanent setup, the remediation plant that will use mobile machines can be shifted from one place to another in 15 days, he added.Naresh Prabhu, director of Zigma Global, said the firm which has a collaboration with South Korean municipal solid waste management company Forcebel, “will segregate and dispose of around 1.5 lakh tonne garbage in next two years”. “The technology used is partly Indian, partly Korean,” he said.Zigma Global has installed waste remediation plant in five places — Kumbakonam, Sembakkam and Pammal in Tamil Nadu, Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, and Vadodara in Gujarat. “The remediation plant caters to fresh garbage in a scientific manner in three stages — stabilisation, segregation and disposal,” Prabhu said.In the first state, garbage will be stabilised by converting into windrows, a method of collecting them in a triangle shape. “We’ll then spray bio-culture on waste. This ensures there’s no smell and flies. This act also reduces moisture to 25% and eliminates pathogens. The stabilisation process completes in three months,” he said.Once the waste is stabilised, the company will set up mobile machinery at the waste sites.“The stabilised waste will be used in the machine for segregation. The input waste will come out in three forms — stone, soil and combustible (refuse derived fuel or RDF). The combustible product will be supplied to the cement companies which would use them as alternative fuel. The stone and soil will be dumped in other low-lying areas for final disposal,” the Zigma Global director said. The firm will charge Authority Rs 1,193 for every tonne of garbage remediation and disposal.
