Noida: Two women caught running illegal abortion centres

NOIDA: Acting on a complaint received on Tehsil diwas-dedicated for grievance redressal of citizens’ complaints , the health department on Monday recovered medicines and equipment used in termination of pregnancy from two women running unregistered abortion and delivery centres in Gautampuri colony of Dadri area.The women Reena Lal and Zareena Bilayat had been running these centres in the colony for over a decade.Both of them have no medical degree or diploma in medicine but could only produce certificates for short-term courses of training in hospitals for “child care”.According to a complaint received from a resident of the same colony, the women had been performing illegal termination on pregnancy on girls and women.“These women operate from their homes in the colony and throw the aborted foetuses in the drains. This creates a very dirty environment in the colony,” reads the complaint dates June 19, 2018.Medical superintendent of the Dadri Community health centre (CHC) Dr Amit Kumar told TOI that a team of the health department comprising a pharmacist, two staff nurses and he himself raided the spot around 11 am on Monday along with two constables.Equipment including injections for abortion, equipment, glucose bottles and blood-soaked used gloves were recovered from the two homes where the ladies had been running the centres from.Both the centres are abutting each other.While Zareena told officials that she had been running the centre for the past 15 years, Reena had been running the centre for the past 10 years almost, sources said.When their registration documents are with the health department were sought, Zareena produced a 30-day training certificate form primary health centre in Meerut which said that she underwent an aya training programme while Reena showed a certificate from a primary health centre in Hathras that said that she was trained in child care for one-year and could advise pregnant women and conduct delivery.Despite the seizure and the serious charges, the health department is yet to lodge an FIR in the matter.Dadri SHO Munish Chauhan told TOI that a team of police had accompanied the health department team for the raid but the latter is yet to lodge an FIR in the matter.“We are waiting for a complaint from the department.
