GREATER NOIDA: Panic struck again in Shahberi village on Saturday after 30 families had to be evacuated from four buildings within metres of the double building collapse site, apparently after one of the apartments developed cracks in the walls.Although some residents said one of the buildings had tilted slightly following heavy rain through the day, the district administration denied the claim, saying the walls had developed cracks and the families were told to evacuate as a precautionary measure.The buildings that were emptied in Shahberi were the six-storey JP heights, the five-floor Siddharth Apartment, GK Homes, which is five-storey high, and a two-storey house. JP Heights, which is just 100 metres from the two buildings that collapsed on Tuesday, developed cracks on the walls.In another apartment in Sector Beta 2, around 50 families had to be evacuated after an adjacent plot that had been dug up to construct another flat was filled with water following the showers on Saturday.Akhilesh Tripathi, the SHO of Bisrakh police station, said the basement of the building closest to the site of Tuesday’s collapse was filled with water from the rain. “Local residents said the building had started tilting and this created a panic. According to Rakesh Babu, the chowki in-charge of Beta 2, pipelines at the newly dug-up pit at the adjacent construction site had broken following the rain and it was filled with water.Officials said necessary action would be taken against the builder, Ankit Sharma, who had dug up the pit. Sharma is absconding.
