Waterlogging due to encroachment of open spaces, say experts

Large expanses of open spaces have been blocked with cement. The maximun temperature hovered around 30 degree Celsius.Experts said lack of prior planning and levelling, over-concretisation of open spaces combined with faulty drainage systems are reasons for waterlogging . “The drainage system of Noida and Greater Noida is giving away. NOIDA/GREATER NOIDA: The second day of rain showed up Noida and Greater Noida’s inability to deal with a normal monsoon. The city should have been planned with more open green spaces to absorb the water into the ground,” a senior city-based architect told TOI.Environmentalists also blamed the inadequate rainwater system of the city for waterlogging.

NOIDA/GREATER NOIDA: The second day of rain showed up Noida and Greater Noida’s inability to deal with a normal monsoon. The streets in the twin cities are getting frequently waterlogged even with rainfall levels as low as 10mm.On Sunday, the city experienced 7mm of rainfall till afternoon. The maximun temperature hovered around 30 degree Celsius.Experts said lack of prior planning and levelling, over-concretisation of open spaces combined with faulty drainage systems are reasons for waterlogging . “The roads have to be at a higher level than drains and sloped correctly so that the water drains out of the streets, but such a system needs adequate planning. In Noida, Greater Noida and other parts of NCR, we see that the roads are given least priority at planning stage, so obviously such a situation has started to show now,” said Gaurav Bansal, environmental lawyer at the National Green Tribunal (NGT).“Noida is increasingly getting waterlogged because of over-concretisation. Large expanses of open spaces have been blocked with cement. Ideally they should have been covered with inter-locking tiles which leave gaps for water to pass through them. The rainwater now has nowhere to go but to collect at the low lying areas due to lack of drainage. The city should have been planned with more open green spaces to absorb the water into the ground,” a senior city-based architect told TOI.Environmentalists also blamed the inadequate rainwater system of the city for waterlogging. “The drainage system of Noida and Greater Noida is giving away. There has been over-development with so many shopping malls, apartments and commercial buildings. The city’s basic infrastructure has not been built to support this growth spurt. The rainwater system too has not been developed accordingly, so the city is flooding even as the ground water level is dropping,” said Vikrant Tongad, an environmentalist.
