NOIDA: A jewellery shop on Bhangel main road was robbed of ornaments worth Rs 10 lakh by two youths, one of whom posed as a customer while his accomplice stayed guard on a bike outside. What has made the police’s job difficult is that two CCTV cameras installed inside the shop were not working when the robbery took place around 5pm on Sunday.Sanjay Goel (54), who has been running the jewellery store in Bhangel for the past 30 years, said he was alone at the shop when a youth, possibly in his early twenties and dressed impeccably, entered the premises around 5pm.The youth asked for gold rings and flashed a bundle of 500-rupee notes. He then asked Sanjay if he accepted only cash or he could pay using his card. When Sanjay told him he accepted both forms of payment, the youth sat down to see the ornaments that the shop owner had started showcasing by then.“He suddenly whipped out a gun from his shoulder bag and pointed it at me. Before I could do anything, the man grabbed a handful of gold and started running towards the gate. He was in such hurry that some of the ornaments fell off his hand ,” said Sanjay, who lives a few buildings away with his wife, father, a younger brother and three children. The youth rushed out of the shop and got into the bike, whose engine had been kept on by his accomplice. “The other youth had his helmet on. Both of them sped towards Sector 82. I ran for almost 100 metres, but they escaped,” Sanjay said. The store owner informed police, who took about 15 minutes to come from Bhangel outpost, which is less than 200 metres away. The police team was later joined by SSP Ajay Pal Sharma at the spot. The shop had four CCTV cameras — two inside and as many outside — but the two inside the showroom weren’t working.Rajpal Singh Tomar, the SHO of Phase 2 police station, said a case had been registered against the two unidentified men. “We are trying to identify the accused from the footage we have collected from cameras installed outside the shop and in other showrooms in the vicinity. Two of the CCTVs inside the shop weren’t working,” Tomar said.
