Biker dies as chemical jet from crushed can hits him

Ghaziabad: A 28-year-old biker died in an accident in Loni on Wednesday after being hit by a spray of corrosive liquid, suspected to be a chemical , from a can on the road that was squashed by an auto’s wheels.The accident happened around 6 pm near the under-construction Johripur Enclave metro station.Police said the man who died was Amit Chauhan, a resident of Karawal Nagar in Delhi. Eyewitnesses said Chauhan was travelling from the direction of Shahdara towards Loni with a pillion rider on a bike. The pillion rider, who has been identified by police as Rahul (35), has been admitted to GTB Hospital in Delhi.An eyewitness, Dinesh Rana, who runs a hardware store near the metro station, said labourers working at the metro station rushed Amit and Rahul to GTB Hospital. Amit died in hospital around 9.30pm.Rana said, “A biker was carrying the can that was tied with a string to the carrier of his motorcycle. The string broke and the can fell on the road. A speeding auto loaded with passengers ran its front wheel over the can. A jet of fluid from the can hit the biker and the pillion rider. The men fell from the bike and began to writhe in pain.”“Amit said before his death the can had fallen from the metro station. It probably contained some kind of acid. We are awaiting a formal complaint,” said Rojant Tyagi, SHO of Loni Border police station.DMRC said, “Metro workers rushed them to hospital. The incident had nothing to do with Delhi Metro. No work that requires use of such chemicals is in progress there. The work has been completed here.”
